We are a chapter of the NGO, RESULTS Canada. Our vision: a poverty-free world. We focus primarily on ensuring that our nation, through our commitments to the world, can help create that.

What separates us?
ADVOCACY THAT SHAPES POLICY.
OUR ISSUES ARE STRATEGIC.

HOW WE DO ADVOCACY:

Write letters

The Hill staff scan print media to get an idea of what citizens are talking about. Getting a letter-to-the-editor or an op-ed about one of our issues indicate that everyday citizens CARE about them! This is an extremely effective way to create political will.
Meet with MPs and Decision-makers
We want to inspire and inform decision-makers who can carry on our cause to a higher level. There are so many issues that politicians face that they often need a reminder of the issues that really need attention. They in turn, help table petitions, or speak about it at The House.
Spread awareness
Through any outlet possible: social media, blogs, let's get people more aware about our issues.

RESULTS Canada is part of an international NGO, RESULTS, based in Washington D.C. It is now present in six countries! To learn more:

Overview
67 MILLION children are not enrolled. The UN's Education for All goals must be met by 2015. Estimates are that it will cost $16B. BUT get this: annual GDP increases by 1% with each year of additional schooling implemented. Hello world, isn't this a great investment? Pardon me, it is but it's not just that. Education is a RIGHT! The Global Partnership for Education (GPE) is the only existing global mechanism focusing on basic education, operating in 46 countries. Its proven success resulted in more countries wanting their programs, and now faces a financial gap.

The world is way behind on the Education MDG. The World Bank decided to pledge an additional $750M to speed up progress -- why not invest in GPE and its approved educational programs?

Key players

Come on Canada!
Increase our yearly $21M GPE investment to $125M to bridge the gap for 2015. Our foreign aid invests in the World Bank, why not promote the GPE?

Overview
The 1990 World Summit addressed the issue of 40 000 children dying of preventable diseases every year. Since then, this number has been cut my half, most notably due to basic immunizations for polio and the measles. Canada hosted the G8 in 2010 and created the Muskoka Initiative. The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunizations (GAVI) is a leader in developing cutting-edge vaccines, including ones for pneumococcal diseases.

Key players

Please, Canada:
Make sure we keep up a leadership role in child and maternal health; our government already cut back on our initial $1B pledge. GAVI's first replenishment occurred in June 2011. Canada should be committing $100M as it is also an investment towards the Muskoka Initiative.

With an example such as the Grameen Foundation in Bangladesh, microcredit is proving to be an excellent self-sustaining tool for the poor. A loan as small as $20 for tools or a loom is now possible for them. While still a topic of controversy to some economists, there are impressive return rates from borrowers and a strengthening of women roles in community as household contributors.

The Microcredit Summit Campaign is working to provide access to financial services to now, 175 million of the world's poorest people and to support 100 million of them to cross the poverty threshold ($1.25/day) - all by 2015. MSC also wants to create a 'Seal of Excellence' to be given to microcredit instutions (MI) who have the best results. This award, of course, will need an elaborate rating scheme developed. It is to establish the credibility and reliability of MIs for continued support from donors.

Key players

Overview
This is the foundation for all of the other issues. Lack of proper sanitation and hygiene leads to poor health, which then create a barrier to education, or economic prosperity. Over 2 BILLION people don't have access to a proper toilet. When teenage girls begin to menstruate, they drop out of school. Diarrhoeal diseases are the leading killer for children under 5, and all it takes is a bar of soap.

NOV19: World Toilet Day

We ask Canada to:
Invest in the Global Sanitation Fund, through the UN-initiated Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council. This will also tie in to our Muskoka Initiative, ensuring child and maternal health.

Overview
People living with HIV in poverty, actually die from tuberculosis (TB). TB is a silent killer, a complex disease laden with stigma. More than 2B people have the TB bacilli but UN's 40% of cases are 'missing'. The Global Fund has been a huge player in fighting TB. Due to donor countries pulling their contributions from the economic crisis, the Fund's 2012 replenishment has been cancelled COMPLETELY.

Key players

Go Canada!
Canada has provided over 1/3 of all funding for the worldwide Stop TB Partnership. CIDA helped launched the initiative, TB-Reach, with multi-year grant support. TB-Reach is a champion TB detection and for the innovative diagnostic tool, GeneXpert. We're awesome.

Help the Global Fund
Canada is doing alright amidst the crisis, let's help the Global Fund as much as we can. In fact, we are short of our 0.7 target, proposed by the late PM Lester B. Pearson in the 1960s. We're only at 0.33 and it's been 50 years!

March 14, 2012
This semester has been pretty light, in terms of RESULTS activities, with just the education petition for February. This Wednesday is the March meeting of the Ottawa Group. So, how about completing one last action before the school-year ends? March 24th is World TB Day.

Let's meet with the Ottawa Group, to write our draft letter, and to learn more. There will be a guest speaker! Larry Reed, the new Director of the Microcredit Summit Campaign, is coming to the meeting! It's an opportunity to meet the new Director and get updates on the campaign. Please be on time!

FEBRUARY ACTION: World Bank to fund Education
Our petition has surpassed its goal of 1000 signatures over ~2 months with 1300. Most of them are paper copies, who knew that they would surpass the speedy online petition?

We need to get ourselves aware of pressing issues and seek entry points on how to generate buzz to get everyone involved.

September 8, 2011: Clubs Week

Thanks for those who came to see us at our table! We were thrilled to see how many people were interested in becoming global citizens.

August 22, 2011: R.I.P. Jack

"TO YOUNG CANADIANS: All my life I have worked to make things better. Hope and optimism have defined my political career, and I continue to be hopeful and optimistic about Canada. Young people have been a great source of inspiration for me. I have met and talked with so many of you about your dreams, your frustrations, and your ideas for change. More and more, you are engaging in politics because you want to change things for the better. Many of you have placed your trust in our party. As my time in political life draws to a close I want to share with you my belief in your power to change this country and this world. There are great challenges before you, from the overwhelming nature of climate change to the unfairness of an economy that excludes so many from our collective wealth, and the changes necessary to build a more inclusive and generous Canada. I believe in you. Your energy, your vision, your passion for justice are exactly what this country needs today. You need to be at the heart of our economy, our political life, and our plans for the present and the future."

Happy New Year and Happy New Semester!

Here is our calendar for the semester:

Friday, November 19, 2010: World Toilet Day
The Health Promotion team of uOttawa along with WaterCan, made this event happen at UCU. Through a bit of humour, there was a SQUAT-A-THON where students can win prizes. But the main message is that it helps spread awareness about the global sanitation crisis. Andrea Helfer from WaterCan showed me this excellent documentary by Vanguard, which I thought gave a very truthful glimpse on this very issue (- Rochelle)

November, 2010: Fundraiser re-cap
The event was a success! $4 145! If you add this to existing monthly RESULTS donors and existing monthly RESULT.ED Donors - the total that Ottawa/Gatinea brings in annually is closer to $20,000 (email from Chris Dendys)

Two of our members got published! Patrick got published by The Ottawa Citizen with his wonderful article, Value for sanitation and Rochelle's LTE piece entitled Scholarly Sanitation is on our very own University paper, The Fulcrum! Check them out!

Thursday, September 9, 2010: Clubs Fair
Despite the drizzle, we had a great time at the Clubs Fair! We were fortunate to be in between two cool groups: The Chinese Student Association who were giving out free shirts, and the Indian Student Association with great music! So many people were interested in the group and supported our cause and petition, and there were those that just wanted the free cookie :D. Overall, we got plenty of people on our mailing list and signatures!

Here is our Fall Semester schedule:

March 25, 2010
Although the subject of toilets and proper hygiene can be funny at times, it really is a big problem in certain areas of the world. Personally, we would have never thought of sanitation as being a 'luxury'. It isn't the most appetizing subject either, but we want you to be our guest, we want you to be aware because awareness is the first step towards improvement. Therefore, we wanted to have a more formal event to meet the importance of the issue. We thank Leslie Moreland from WaterCan and Sabina Saini from RESULTS for being our guest speakers. Your talks were inspiring and we plan to stay in touch to continue advocating for sanitation.

March 20, 2010
Sadia has been featured as an Everyday Hero Profile on the RESULTS website!

January 31, 2010
Our revised petition for the PM Stephen Harper is ready! If you can, please circulate it and get back to us. Your help is much needed.
Word (Compatible mode): Our petition for Stephen Harper

January 29, 2010
Rochelle had her op-ed published with University of Ottawa's The Fulcrum. It is on the second page of this week's issue: Aid in the face of poverty

January 26, 2010
Our own Stephen Harper has published a rare op-ed in the Toronto Star. "As president of the G8 in 2010, Canada will champion a major initiative to improve the health of women and children in the world's poorest regions. Members of the G8 can make a tangible difference in maternal and child health and Canada will be making this the top priority in June." Read full article...
